Clarify beforehand what belongs to your tasks as granny

Before you confirm your stay with a family you should be in agreement about some details concerning your au pair stay. Thus there will be no unpleasant surprises later on, and both sides know what they are letting themselves in for. These are some of the things you should talk about beforehand.

• Accomodation
  Sort out beforehand, how you will be hosted in the family. Has you got your own bathroom or do you have to share? Or do you have the opportunity to live in a nearby bed and breakfast?
• CULTURE SHOCK
  Maybe you will be living in a culture very foreign to you. Take your time to become accommodated. Maybe the strange surroundings will be disconcerting for you at the beginning and you will need a bit of time to come to terms with the new impressions. Talk about this with your family or a confidant.
• HOLIDAYS AND LEISURE TIME
  Sort out from the beginning, when you will have time at your own disposal. Will you be participating in the family’s activities or does the family want to have time to itself.  Use your chance to get to know your host country.
• POCKET MONEY AND TRAVEL COSTS
  Make clear agreements about all things concerning money. Your board and lodging are free in return for childcare. If you receive pocket money or your travel costs are shared is a negotiable matter between you and your family.
• HOUSEWORK
  A Granny Aupair should not work as a cleaner. But many Grannies are prepared to help in the household. Talk about this beforehand with your family, then both sides know where they stand.
