Newsletter Grannies - How to find your Dream-Family - Tips from Granny Aupair

Dear Reader, dear Ladies,

We are delighted - the Granny Aupair community is constantly growing again! To ensure that your search will quickly lead you to your dream destination or family, we would like to pass on a few useful tips that we have gathered in the course of our nearly 14 years of experience.

1. Profile complete and up-to-date?
A profile should give a good overview and be easily understandable and readable for the reader. Please avoid long rambling texts and unnecessary  repetitions. You can write something about yourself in the free text fields. Ideally in English and a second language (the Google or Deepl translator can help here). Not every family can speak perfect English for instance.

Please keep your profile up to date, to avoid disappointments. If you have found a family and do not want to send or receive further contact requests, please deactivate your profile under profile settings. If you are looking for a family for a later date, please change the date of your possible arrival.

2. Uploaded photos?
Please upload a couple of nice photos in your profile. Please remember that often the whole family including the children choose a Granny (and vice versa). Varied images in various contexts (for instance with pets, own grandchildren, doing hobbies etc.) are certainly helpful to let families have a first impression. Profiles without photos are not looked at so often.

3.  Dates don’t fit?
You can contact the families as long as their profiles are visible, even if their entries (like date of Granny arrival) seem to be in the past. If you like the look of families, but their entries like length of stay and date of arrival do not tally with your wishes, we still recommend getting in touch. Often something has changed and many members look for several Grannies following one another. Many things are negotiable and asking questions does not cost anything.

4. Active enough?
Make the best out of your membership and be active. The more actively you seek contacts, the greater your chances will be of a successful placement.

5. Received a contact request?
If you have received a contact request, try to reply as soon as possible, even if you give a refusal. You are welcome to write a reason for this.

6. Agreed on expectations and requirements?
Search with heart and mind - before you commit to a family, you should agree on the essential conditions your time together. That way, there will be no unwelcome surprises later and both sides know what they have to expect.
The families are relying on you and a cancellation at short notice puts them in trouble.

7. Personal attitude checked?
A Granny should be treated like a family member - that is, like a temporary grandmother - and integrated into family life. And vice versa, the Granny should not try to impose her way of life and views on the family. Tolerance, politeness and kindness are important - and this applies to both sides!

8. Found a family?
When you have found a family, please send us a short e-mail or give us a call and tell us, where you are going and from when. By doing so, you help us to keep the community up to date.

And one more thing: Granny Aupair is a little adventure for everyone involved. Many wonderful opportunities to learn from each other lie in the encounter. Au Pair translates as „reciprocal“ and it is in this sense that we would like the encounters to take place. Below we present three families who would like to welcome a Granny Aupair in the near future. And more families can be found on our community here. Maybe your dream-family is among them? And if you have any queries, you can send us a mail or give us a call.

Very best wishes

Your Michaela Hansen and your Granny Aupair-Team

Sweden: Spectacular, varied Södermanland

Located south-west of Stockholm, the Swedish province of Södermanland is famous for its numerous castles and manor houses, but also for its fantastic archipelago.

Near the small town of Järna, about 50 minutes from Stockholm, a family of five with the user name Wikih (mum and 2 daughters, 14 and 2 and twins from March) is looking for support from a loving, (baby) experienced, nature-loving temporary grandma with a driving licence as soon as possible. Both girls go to school or kindergarten until the afternoon and the little one is with her father every other weekend. Mum is very close to nature and also grows her own vegetables.

The Granny will be provided with a nice room in a house in the countryside. Travelling expenses will be covered in part.

Companion in Bella Italia

Between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennines, the Italian Marche region offers the best of both worlds: long sandy and pebble beaches, but also cosy mountain villages with magnificent views. Surrounded by picturesque nature, the small town of Petriolo can be found here with a beautiful monastery, many historic buildings and alleys.

In this historic community near the university town of Ancona, a British lady (username CC) who is caring for her husband who has Alzheimer's disease and Parkinsons would like the support and company of from her next patient and experienced Granny, ideally with a driving licence as from January. As the family has a large female dog, a companion with a dog would also be welcome. A nice large room with private bathroom awaits the Granny in a spacious house with fantastic valley views. Travel costs will be covered in part.

Spanish-Speaking Granny for Texas

With vibrant entertainment, art and culture, inspiring cuisine and stunning outdoor experiences, Austin, the capital of the US-State of Texas has a lot to offer.

Here a American-Mexican-Indian family of three (user name
remelende) with a 2 year old son and a dog would like to welcome a perferably Spanish speaking Granny Aupair with driving licence to help the parents, as the mother starts a new job soon. Little Ahaan goes to day care until the early afternoon, so the Granny would have time to explore the exciting city and/or visit a language course. A nice room in a large house in the city centre is available for the Granny. The travel costs will be taken over completely.
