Newsletter Grannies - Unfulfilled desire for Grandchildren - what to do?

Dear Ladies,

Reinhild would love to be a Granny. She had always dreamt of cuddling with the little ones, to dry their tears, to play with them and bake cakes. “What grandmothers simply do”, she says and adds: “My daughter, my only child, never wanted children.”

Like Reinhild many of our Grannies have not been blessed by grandchildren yet or their grandchildren live far away. And many of our families have no grandmother living nearby, who can help them in their strictly booked daily life. Reinhild had already waited long enough and discovered a new alternative for herself. She has now been a Granny Aupair with a young family in England for a couple of months and is looking after the two children there lovingly. “The little ones have grown so close to my heart. Sometimes it is quite strenuous, but I feel so much pleasure every day – even if I am only the temporary Granny.”

As a suggestion and inspiration we would like to introduce you to two families who would love to welcome a loving Granny as soon as possible: I In the beautiful region of Heckengäu in the south-west of Germany offers some fantastic views. Across the many hedgerows, which spread many blossoms through the landscape in Spring, over the juniper heath and the herds of sheep. In these idyllic surroundings a small family (Dad and 8 year old daughter) are looking for a loving temporary Granny as soon as possible. They live between the Black Forest and Swabian Alb in the village of Bondorf near Böblingen. Stuttgart with its many sights and culture is only 40 kilometres away.

No other city in Switzerland enjoys such wealth of culture, leisure and enjoyment as Bern. In their city the inhabitants enjoy life and take time for the really important things. The unique old part of town, which is a World Heritage Site offers many sights as well as the weather-protected stretch of shopping promenade, the “Lauben”, where you can comfortably shop in any weather. In this capital of Switzerland an international family is looking forward to welcoming a loving Granny Aupair as from August.

In our newsletters we only introduce you to selected families. For more just take a look at our website www.granny-aupiar.com. There you can find families from all over the world. In one of our last newsletters we asked our experienced Grannies for helpful tips. Granny Anke sent us ten fanstastic pieces of advice – see below. Thank you very much, dear Anke!

The very best wishes from

Michaela Hansen and your Granny Aupair Team

History and Culture

The Swiss capital of Bern is shaped by the beautiful medieval inner city and surroundings. The multicultural metropolis is home to some of Switzerland’s greatest museums and galleries. Here a family (user name nusle) is looking for an animal loving, responsible Granny , who should also have a driving license, as from August for their two children (boy 5 and girl 2). A lovely room with private bath in a large house near Bern is waiting for the Granny. The travel costs will be taken over in part.

Between the Black Forest and Swabian Alb

In the parish of Bondorf near the town of Böblingen this single father with his eight year old daughter (user name systemfabrik) is looking for a responsible, loving temporary Granny as soon as possible. As Natalie goes to school until 16:00 on most days, the Granny Aupair would have a lot of free time and freedom to use for herself and / or with Natalie. As the father’s business also encompasses travel (sometimes overnight) reliable care is very important to him. The Granny will have a lovely room in an ample house in beautiful surroundings. The travel costs will be taken over completely.

10 bits of advice to make being a Granny Aupair easier

Compiled by Granny Anke, who was in France for four months as a Granny Aupair in 2015

  1. You are basically keen on occupying yourself with (young) children.

  2. You discuss mutual expectations with the family.

  3. You are curious (in the sense of positive-open minded) to get to know other family structures and integrate yourself into the new surroundings.

  4. You can work in a structured and forward-looking manner and see your main job as backing up the parents and taking over some of the child care from them, so that everyday life works better. You can discover the country and its people in your spare time.

  5. You are reliable and resilient.

  6. You let yourself in for the family and its way of life. There is a reason why it is like it is.

  7. You should sort out if suggestions for improvements are desired. You are only accompanying the family for a short time and principally should not question established rules, even if you yourself would do things differently.

  8. Bring a time consuming occupation with you from home, which you like doing to bridge waiting time and spare hours contentedly.

  9. Try making social contacts outside the family. This helps against homesickness, brings some diversion and broadens the horizon in your new surroundings. In addition you can receive valuable insider information this way.

  10. If necessary you should try to learn the language.
