Newsletter Grannies - It is never too late

Dear Ladies,

To live life to the full to the very last minute, true to the motto “It is never too late to start something new” that’s the guideline of Andreas Kruse, Director of the Institute of Gerontology at the University of Heidelberg and one of the best-known gerontologists in Germany.

The expert has found out that it is important for people to see themselves as part of social relationships and to be integrated into care structures up to high old age: This means not only 'I should be cared for' – but also 'I want to care about others and care for others'.

The researcher of ageing considers it particularly important to bring the different generations into contact with each other, since the get-together of generations can be a remarkable source of solidarity and mutual support.

This living together of several generations in combination with the experience of something new is especially possible as a Granny Aupair: Discover a new country, a new culture and enjoy the time with different generations in your host family!

At the moment, various families from around the world are looking for a loving temporary granny, to support them with advice and assistance. You can find further information below, where we introduce you to four of the families, who are looking for a Granny soon or a bit later in the year, or  on our website where further  families from many countries are looking forward to your contact request.

Best wishes from

Springtime between London and Oxford

In spring, the United Kingdom shows itself in all its glory. On sunny days the thermometer can rise to pleasant temperatures, you enjoy the beautiful scenery in English gardens and parks and bask in the first rays of sun. Situated near the small town of Thame between London and Oxford, a small family with a five-year-old daughter (user name frances v) is looking for an experienced, responsible temporary grandmother as from the end of March or later, with a driver's license, who is also confident enough to drive the family's car in England (the family would also pay for a few driving lessons). The little daughter has to be taken to school in the morning and picked up in the afternoon by car. The Granny would have time until the afternoon to attend a language course and explore the surroundings, including Oxford and London, both of which are not far away by train. A beautiful room with private bathroom in a spacious house in a rural environment awaits the Granny. A car is also provided.

Picturesque Fontainebleau Region

Here in the small town of Vernou-la-Celle-sur-Seine a  doctor and midwife’s family of five (user name Vanessa P.) with two year old triplets (2 girls, 1 boy) and a dog is looking for a loving and reliable Granny Aupair as  from the beginning of April to support the parents. The children go to a crèche twice a week, the mother is home on parental leave, so the Granny would have plenty of time to explore the exciting surroundings and/or visit a language course. A lovely room with private bath in a large house with a beautiful garden on a rural area is waiting for the Granny. The travel costs will be taken over in part.

Multicultural heart of Europe

Art, culture and places of interest can be found on every corner in lively, multicultural Brussels. In addition, Belgium's capital city offers interesting small streets alleys and charming cafés and restaurants to stroll by and enjoy. 20 kilometres south-east of Brussels, in the small town of La Hulpe with its beautiful chateau, an Irish family of five (user name: Chrissie St.) with three boys (3-years-old and 8-month-old twins) is looking for a flexible, loving Granny Aupair from May onwards, to give the parents some support.

The three boys go to the kindergarten or crèche until late afternoon (except Wednesdays), so the Granny would also have plenty of time to explore the exciting and diverse surroundings, take a language course or join one of the various international clubs. A beautiful large room with private bathroom awaits the Granny on the outskirts of the metropolis. The travel expenses will be taken over in part.

Historic University Town

The heart of the famous historic city of Cambridge in the east of England is shaped by the university's architecturally exceptional colleges. But Cambridge also has a lot more to offer: Busy market squares, cosy tearooms, the Cambridge Fens close by and London only an hour away by train. In a village near this beautiful university city, an family of five  (username: Viccol33) with 2 girls (9 and 1) and a boy (7) plus guinea pigs is looking for an experienced loving temporary grandma as from March. The children go to school and the youngest to nursery (3 days) nursery during the week, so the Granny would also have time for herself, for example to attend a language course. A lovely room with a private bathroom in a spacious house is waiting for the Granny. Travel expenses will be covered in part.

A tip from a host mother...

As part of our 10th anniversary, we asked some grannies and families for tips for future Granny Aupairs. Here are some of them from an experienced Granny Aupair "mother" from Ireland: “Homesickness is a problem even in more advanced age. This is not to be underestimated and we experienced it with most of them! You should be very aware of this beforehand. If you are planning a longer stay, you may want to plan a home leave, which we personally discuss and approve with the Grannies beforehand. A Granny once said that it is not only a holiday abroad and all about travelling, one also commits oneself to the family and also has tasks. It is a give and take. The Grannies should also be aware of this. Tasks should be clearly discussed with the families in advance so that there are no unwelcome surprises.”
