Newsletter Grannies - Absent Grandchildren…

Dear Grannies,

Unfortunately, many of our Grannies do not have grandchildren (yet), or their own grandchildren live far away or are already grown up. Many of our families also do not have grandparents nearby who can help them with their busy everyday lives or are not able to do so anymore. A Granny Aupair can be a meaningful alternative.

Children who are looked after by temporary grandparents develop a relationship with them that is comparable to that with ‘regular’ grandparents. And our ‘bonus grandmas’ frequently feel very close to the families, often forming friendships that last for years.

As a Granny Aupair, in return for free board and lodging, you have the unique opportunity to explore the way of life in a foreign environment – whether near and far – and, if you wish, to learn the language. There are so many good reasons to take the plunge!

Seize the chance to surpass yourself once again by helping as a Granny Aupair in young families. Today, we are once again introducing you to two families who would like to welcome a loving temporary grandma into their home in the near future.

You can find even more families on our online community.

Very best wishes from

Your Michaela Hansen and Your Granny Aupair-Team

On the shores of New Jersey

The beautiful coastal community of Highlands is located directly on the American Jersey Shore overlooking Highlands Reach, Sandy Hook Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Offering pristine beaches Highlands also has many boating, touring and shopping opportunities.

Here a small family with the user name Mekleberry1 (mother and 3 year old son plus 2 King Charles Spaniels) would like to welcome an experienced, loving temporary grandma with a driving license, ideally as from September or even in August if possible. Little Hunter goes to  pre-school every day until 3, during August he would need supervision at a private beach club, where he goes to play.

A large room with private bathroom in a big house on the outskirts is waiting for the Granny. The travel costs will be taken over in part.

Capital of the Southern French Alps

The historical French town of Gap, located in the Hautes-Alpes department in Provence is known for its cultural and natural heritage. Nicknamed the „Mellow Capital of the Southern French Alps“, the city has busy town squares, colorful buildings and great historical sites and is situated near to beautiful landscapes.

Here a small family (user name Charance) mother with a nearly 4 year old son and a cat is looking for a calm, caring and experienced temporary grandma, who maybe also likes cooking, to support the mother. The little boy goes to pre-school 4 days a week in the mornings and afternoons with a lunch break in between. The mother works from home a lot.

A large room with private bath in a house with garden in the city center is available for the Granny. The travelling costs will be taken over completely.

Which visa?

Unfortunately, there is no special Granny au pair visa yet. If you travel to a country that requires a visa as a temporary grandma, you cannot officially do so as an au pair. Au pair visas are only available to people up to the age of approximately 28! Since Granny Aupair was founded in 2010, we have been fighting for a change in the age limits for au pairs and have already approached various national and international authorities and institutions on this matter. Unfortunately, the authorities do not see any need for action at this time. We very much hope that something will finally be done about the age-discriminatory and outdated legislation (the laws generally date back to the 1960s!).

If you are an EU citizen you do not need a visa to travel within the European Union and can travel with your identity card or passport. For destinations outside the European Union (including the United Kingdom), you need a passport and, depending on the country, you may also need an electronic travel authorisation such as ESTA or ETA.  You can find out whether you need a visa for your destination, how to obtain one and how much it costs on the embassy website of your destination country or in the country information provided by the Foreign Office of your home country.
