Newsletter Families - Maintaining languages and traditions with Granny Aupair

Dear Families,

A large number of Granny Aupair families in Europe and abroad are so-called "intercultural families", for whom it is important that their children have access to the values and traditions of their countries or cultures of origin. Their original language or mother tongue is an essential part of this, so that the children can find access to the roots of the cultures of both partners.

Granny Aupairs can help especially in view of language, but also regarding the teaching of traditions, by engaging with the children in as many ways as possible and thereby consolidating the language through play. This is best done through repetitive patterns in a variety of situations – playing games, doing handicrafts, singing, etc. In return, a Granny Aupair has the unique opportunity to explore the way of life in a different environment – whether abroad or in an intercultural family in her own country – and possibly also to learn the language, with free board and lodging in the family.

Seize the chance to invite a Granny Aupair to stay with you and thus bring a little bit of home into a foreign environment. Today we introduce you to three Grannies who would like to support a nice family as a temporary grandmother in the near future. You can see more Granny profiles in our online community

Very best wishes from

your Michaela Hansen und your Granny Aupair-Team

Empathetic and experienced: Granny Angela

Granny Angela (user name Angela W.) would like to help a family, preferably in a French-speaking country, as a Granny Aupair or companion from April. The 64-year-old former special educational teacher has worked with disabled people for many years.

The mother of three grown-up sons (including twins) loves cooking and baking and is also passionate about handicrafts. She also enjoys hiking in nature.  In her profile she writes: "To improve my knowledge (of French) and with the skills of my professional life, I would like to better my French in the course of my au pair placement. Besides, I am looking forward to get to know another country in Europe."

Versatile and helpful – Granny Connie

A little later in the year, from the beginning of September, Granny Connie (username Coroe) would like to spend her four month sabbatical helping a young family in an English-speaking country. The 50-year-old nurse and alternative practitioner loves cooking, cinema, games and hiking, among other things.

The mother of a grown-up daughter is looking forward to an opportunity to share her experiences: “I’d love to stay in a family and be part of the all day routine, and hopefully become kind of a member of the family, I’d like to learn more about the culture and the way of life, than on a holiday-trip”.

Our TIP: Keep your profile smart and up-to-date

We would like to remind you to keep your profile up-to-date. We often receive enquiries from Grannies who wonder about arrival dates in the past on the family profiles (which of course also happens with Grannies) or that the profiles are filled out incompletely.

If you have found a Granny, please also change the possible arrival date of the Granny in the profile. Alternatively, you can deactivate and reactivate your profile at any time during your membership. Please also let us know briefly by e-mail or telephone which Granny is coming to you and from when.

Being a Granny Aupair in COVID19 times

How a Granny Aupair visit works in times of COVID19 is shown by the wonderful report by Granny Frauke, who has just been with the R. family in France...

Dear Granny Nanny Team and Nanny'sMy host family in Saint Luce s/Loire is very loving, they welcomed me with open arms, the children accept my moderate French and correct me.  The mother is a single parent, she has 2 girls 4 + 6 years old, on 4 days they go to school full time. The mother comes from Benin and came to France at a young age to study computer science and stayed.

At the beginning there were teething problems, but that was because of my French. The host mother contacted the neighbours and so I have oral French conversation lessons 3 times a week.

USE THE TIME

I have agreed with my husband that I will come home after 3 months. I will say goodbye here with mixed feelings. I wish all Granny Nannys the courage to look for a Granny Aupair stay! Despite Covid19, it is no problem within Europe. Every European country has a hygiene and health plan.
