Newsletter Families - Mother-in-Law or motherly friend?

Dear Families,

Having a Granny in the house definitely takes a lot of pressure off families - you're not always worrying about your offspring and have your head free for other tasks. And yet some young parents shy away from the idea of contacting a Granny: What if you don't get along? After all, women of this age have a lot of experience, will they let younger people tell them something? Young women in particular are often afraid of getting a kind of strict mother-in-law in the house.

These fears are understandable, but mostly unnecessary. From their long life experience Grannies know that people are different. They are well-mannered and polite and adapt to the new circumstances, but nevertheless bring a breath of fresh air into the house. Many of them are already mothers-in-law themselves and are on good terms with their daughters-in-law.

A new person in the house always means change. But you can help determine from the start whether the change is positive or negative: Talk to each other beforehand, on the phone, via Skype, Facetime or Zoom, and exchange ideas by e-mail. This way you will quickly find out whether you are in agreement. There is no right or wrong here: what does not feel right for one person may be ideal for another. With this freedom in mind, you can confidently embark on the Granny adventure and find out how their support can change your life. In quite a few cases, the Granny even turns out to be a motherly friend who is a heart-warming enrichment not only for the children but also for the parents.

At the moment, around 40 Grannies are looking for a nice family whom they can support with advice and assistance. For example, the bilingual Granny Elouise, who would like to start a Granny adventure in autumn. Or Granny Monika, who would like to support a family with her little dog (more about Elouise and Monika below). And you can see more Granny profiles in our online community.

Best wishes from

your Michaela Hansen und your Granny Aupair-Team

Creative and patient: Granny Elouise

Bilingual Granny Elouise (username: Elouise) is looking forward to embarking on a new adventure worldwide as from autumn. The 49-year-old native South African has worked as a hairdresser and stylist on cruise ships for years. Besides styling and hairdressing, the mother of a grown-up daughter loves cooking, baking, handicrafts, games, hiking and sports, among other things.

The patient and practical Granny, who is interested in countries around the world, writes in her profile: "I lost my husband in 2020 and I’m ready to get out there again, new adventure and an exciting experience. Being a mom, aunty and a women working in my profession taught me a lot about people and myself. I take my commitments seriously, I have a well grounded attitude and I am very patient. I am practical minded which allows me to tackle and solve complex problems."

Open and experienced  – Granny Monika

Granny Monika (user name: kitsh) would also like to help a family, preferably in an English-speaking country, from the beginning of September. She would be accompanied by her little well-behaved dachshund Anny. The 55-year-old former flight attendant and children's nurse worked as an au pair and nanny in her younger years. Her hobbies include baking, handicrafts, hiking and sports.  The mother of two adult children writes in her profile: "I would like to support a family and in the best case be a temporary part of the family. I would respectfully accept the customs and traditions in the family and hope to be an enrichment to them. In turn, of course, I would like to meet new people and gain experience."

Our Tip: Asking questions costs nothing!

Make lots of contact requests! If you like the profile of certain Grannies, but their length of stay and  preferred arrival date do not match your expectations, send a contact request anyway, as often something has changed with the Grannies or they are looking for several families in a row. Many things are negotiable and asking questions costs nothing!

If you receive contact requests and have already found a Granny or are not entirely convinced by the request, then simply write a few words back, even if it is a refusal. That way the Granny won’t be waiting for an answer all the time and won’t be irritate.

Being a Granny Aupair in COVID19 times

"A big thank you goes to 'my' family".

Granny Marion tells us about her Granny experiences in Southern Germany:   Dear Granny Team, I have been back home since January 31st 2021 with many valuable experiences on board. I don't want to miss these three months. I underestimated how quickly and intensively one enters into a relationship and how difficult it can be to say goodbye.

The workshop in Hamburg, which I attended in February 2020, was important for me. Even though I work in family care,  life in an initially unknown family with foreign roots is something different again. The workshop and a convincing experienced Granny pointed this out again and again. In addition, we analyzed our own needs.

A big thank you goes to "my" family, who entrusted me with their children and accepted me into their family. I am curious to see if our connection can last. Many thanks to the Granny team for their support. Best regards to Hamburg Marion L.
