Newsletter Grannies - The changing role of Grandparents

Dear Ladies,

Through the eyes of their grandchildren, grandparents are truly special. They tell stories from another time, listen with patience, and embody a unique blend of generosity, care, and serenity. Grandparents are there when they are needed – sometimes almost like parents, and sometimes in a completely different, wonderfully distinctive way.

While grandparents were once often perceived as strict, distant, or firmly bound to traditional roles, relationships today tend to be much closer and more cooperative. Modern grandparents accompany, support, and lighten the load – without necessarily taking on an educational role. They offer time, attention, and a wealth of life experience. At the same time, they continue to learn themselves: about digital media, new family models, and other cultures.

This special quality of the grandparent–grandchild relationship becomes particularly evident in international families or with (host) grandchildren. Openness, curiosity, and warmth connect generations – even across national borders. In this way, grandparents become bridge builders between the past and the future.

And that is exactly what makes Granny Aupairs so special: they are familiar yet surprising, deeply rooted yet open to new experiences. They are a constant in a rapidly changing world – both for their (host) grandchildren and for their host families.

Below, we introduce three families who are looking for loving support from a Granny Aupair, either in the near future or later this year.

Very best wishes from

Michaela Hansen and your Granny Aupair-Team

Hudson Valley near the Big Apple

The majestic Hudson River, picturesque main streets, first-class shopping, and historic houses and gardens: just 50 kilometres from New York City you can find the community of White Plains in the beautiful Hudson Valley in Westchester County.

Starting in April, a small American-Azerbaijani doctor's family (user name Sariyevam) with a two-year-old daughter is looking for their next warm-hearted, reliable temporary grandma with a driving licence and experience with small children to support the parents, who both work as doctors on shift duty.

The little girl attends nursery full-time, so the Granny's help is mainly needed early in the morning, in the evening and sometimes at weekends, leaving her plenty of time during the day to explore the area and/or take a language course. A lovely room in a large flat in a rural setting awaits the Granny. Travel expenses will be covered in full.

Large Family Life in France's Grand Est region

Nestled in the picturesque landscapes of north-eastern France, the regions of Alsace and Lorraine attract visitors with their rich cultural heritage, culinary delights and artistic wonders. One of France's greenest regions, Lorraine is located on the border with Germany and Luxembourg.

In the town of Sarreguemines, a twelve-member German-French family with ten children aged between 12 and just under 1 (including four-year-old triplets) plus a dachshund, with  the username Familie Seuthe, would like to welcome their next experienced and flexible temporary grandmother with a driving licence, who will mainly give support with their youngest child. The father is mainly at home, the triplets go to nursery until the afternoon and the older children are home-schooled.

The Granny will be provided with a large room with its own bathroom in a separate part of the spacious house – another flat nearby would also be possible. Travel expenses will be covered in part.

Switzerland: Historic gem by the lake

The municipality of Bassins in the Swiss canton of Vaud on Lake Geneva is often referred to as a ‘historic gem’. Characterised by rolling hills and beautiful valleys, the village offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Alps.

By mid-March at the latest, a Swiss-American family of six with four children plus a dog (with only two girls aged 14 and 6 at home) and the user name Sharon L. would like to welcome their next flexible, experienced Granny Aupair with a driving licence as a new member of the family. The two older children (17 and 15) attend boarding school in the USA.

The parents are often travelling back and forth to the USA, so support from Granny would be very welcome at home. The girls attend school full-time (except on Wednesdays), so the Granny would have plenty of time to explore the wonderful surroundings.

The Granny will have a large room with her own bathroom in a big house in a rural setting. Travel expenses will be covered in full.

If you cannot travel flexibly, but only from a certain date, please be sure to indicate this in your profile. (Instead of ‘flexible’).

Before you definitively commit to a family, make sure you have discussed everything beforehand and are certain that you want to go ahead with the plan. The families rely on you, and a last-minute cancellation by the Granny can mean a big problem for them.
