Newsletter Grannies - Granny is great – but so far away

Dear Grannies,

“Grandma is great, but she lives so far away” – a phrase heard in many families today. In the past, generations lived closer together. Children grew up seeing their grandparents regularly, and family visits were simply part of everyday life.

Today, many families live in different cities or even countries, and children often miss that close bond with their grandparents. Yet having different caregivers – siblings, friends, parents, and grandparents – is so valuable. Grandmas and Grandpas often have open hearts and time to listen, play, and nurture creativity. They’re frequently the first to notice the hidden talents in children.

Granny Aupair helps bridge this gap. When grandparents live far away or are no longer around, a loving temporary grandma can bring warmth and experience into a family – and give parents a bit of relief too.

Today we introduce you to three families who are eager to welcome a caring Granny Aupair soon – or even a bit later in the future.

You can find many more wonderful families on our online portal.

Best wishes from

Your Michaela Hansen and Your Granny Aupair-Team

Portugal's multifaceted heart

Wonderful historic districts, World Heritage monuments, Fado houses, picturesque beaches and seaside resorts nearby: all this can be found in Lisbon, Portugal's fascinating capital city.

Here, a German-Portuguese-French family (user  name Os Fidalgos de Lisboa) with two sons (aged 7 and 2) is looking for a loving, patient, flexible temporary grandmother who would also be able to cope well with the warm summer months.

Both boys go to school or nursery until 4 p.m., so the Granny would have plenty of time to explore the exciting cosmopolitan ‘little’ metropolis and/or attend a language course.

During the holidays and long weekends, the family travels to the north of Portugal to help relatives with the olive and almond harvest.

A beautiful room in a large flat in a quiet area, but only 15 minutes from the city centre, awaits the Granny. Travel expenses will be covered in part.

Bonny Scotland

A wonderful blend of  18th and 19th century historic architecture, the picturesque shores of the Firth of Tay and proximity to the city of Dundee: the Scottish town of Newport-on-Tay in the Fife region, not far from mountains, beaches and fascinating landscapes, has all this to offer.

A family of five (user name Franhk) with three children (two girls, currently aged 8 and 6, and a boy, currently aged 4), plus guinea pigs and chickens, are looking for their next live-in Granny with a driving licence and experience with children, who also enjoys cooking, to start on 1 January 2027. The family already has Granny Aupairs for 2026.

The children go to school until 3 p.m., so the Granny would have plenty of time to explore the fantastic surroundings and/or take a language course.

A large room with its own bathroom in a spacious house on the outskirts of town will be provided for the Granny. Travel expenses will be covered in full.

Historic City in Dutch North Brabant

With its Gothic cathedral neo-Gothic buildings, Dutch Classicism and charming inner city, the pittoresque capital of the Dutch region of North Brabant, S’Hertogenbosch, offers a whole range of activities, as well as being close to Eindhoven and Utrecht.

As from the beginning of June 2026 a family of four with girl, now 3, and boy, now 1 year old and the user name dutchfamily is looking for their next loving, experienced Granny Aupair, to speak English with the children, and ideally with a bit of Waldorf/Steiner background (but no prerequisite).

The family would also offer an online language course, in case the Granny is not a native English speaker. Both children are still at home, the Granny’s help would mostly be needed on two full days a week and less hours on other days.

A nice room in a house in the outskirts of the city is waiting for the Granny. The travel costs will be taken over in full.

Whether the family wishes to give their Granny some pocket money is something to be agreed upon individually. Many Grannies prefer not to receive payment, as they don’t want to feel like employees. It’s important to discuss this openly, as well as clarify whether you’ll be joining the family’s leisure activities and who will cover any related costs.
