Newsletter Families - It takes a whole Village...

Dear Families,

an African proverb says: "It takes a whole village to raise a child." Unfortunately, this principle has been largely lost in our Western world, as author Michaeleen Douclef notes. Even today, most children of indigenous peoples grow up in large multi-generational households, and the raising of children is shared. Children thus learn to take over a role and responsibility at an early age.

In contrast, over the past decades, the families living in the modern westernized world have shrunk and usually consist of only one or two parents and one or two children - and maybe a pet. Not only are there often no grandparents nearby but other relatives are also missing. It doesn't have to be a whole village helping with childcare, but a few experienced hands would already be of aid and both sides can learn from each other.

Granny Aupair is also based on this principle of reciprocity - as the term "au pair" suggests: families get the support they so urgently need, and the temporary Grannies are given a task in which they are already experienced and which they enjoy, and they also get to know a different environment or culture. Below we introduce you to several  Grannies, who would love to support a nice family in the near future or a bit later in the year. In addition to these you can find many other Grannies looking for a family to help with their life experience and competence on our online community

The very best wishes for the start of the new year

From your Michaela Hansen and your Granny Aupair-team

Open and reliable: Granny Ursula

As soon as possible, Granny Ursula (username: Susanne Ursula) would like to help out a nice family, preferably in the USA or France. The 62-year-old sporty teacher on sabbatical leave already has had experience as a Granny Aupair.  The versatile Granny is interested in yoga, Pilates, hiking, reading, healthy eating and languages, among other things, and would also like to visit a language course in the host country.

She enjoys being with children (young and old), playing with them and teaching them. In her profile she writes: „It would be a pleasure for me to become part of a family in a foreign country during my sabbatical, supporting them in everyday life. That could be by helping out with household chores, going shopping and cooking. Though mainly it should be by taking care of the wants and needs of the family children – of course in close consultation with the parents.“

Send lots of contact requests! If you like one or more Grannies, but their details, such as preferred length of stay and arrival date, do not match your expectations, then contact them anyway. Often something has changed with the Grannies, they simply have forgotton to change the date in their profile or they are looking for several families in a row - or for a later period. A lot is negotiable and asking costs nothing!

If you receive contact requests and have already said yes to a Granny or don't think it would be a good fit, write a few words back, even if it's a refusal. That way the Granny won't wait in vain for a reply and wonder what happened.
